July 22 in History:

• The 2011 Norway attacks took place on July 22, 2011. On that day two sequential domestic terrorist attacks were carried out in Norway – a bomb blast that targeted government buildings in Oslo, followed by a massacre at a youth camp in Utoya. Over 75 people were killed in the attacks.

• Saddam Hussein‘s sons Uday and Qusay were killed by US forces on July 22, 2003.

• The Gauhati High Court has stayed an Arunachal Pradesh government’s notification prescribing temporary entry permits for “developmental works in public and private sectors” only to people vaccinated against COVID-19. Indians who intend to visit Arunachal Pradesh for business or tourism need to possess an Inner-Line Permit. While tourist ILPs remain suspended, the notification had allowed for temporary permits be issued for developmental works in both public and private sectors, provided such persons are vaccinated for COVID-19. The court said classifying people into the vaccinated and unvaccinated for the purpose of issuance of temporary permit violates the Constitution of India.

• Heavy rains and flooding reported in China. The Henan province is said to have witnessed its heaviest rainfall in a 1,000 years.

• Pakistan has banned TikTok for the fourth time.

• Byju’s has acquired Epic, an online reading platform for kids, for $500 million, to deepen its presence in the US and expand into other English speaking markets.

• Naresh Kumar Sharma, a 5-time Paralympian shooter, has moved the Delhi High Court over not being selected for the upcoming Tokyo Paralympic games. He has contended that the Paralympic Committee of India has deliberately ignored his name for Paralympics despite him fulfilling all the eligibility criteria including achieving the minimum qualifying score.
